First ed., 1928. Now published biennially. Fourteenth ed., 2006, identifies over 11,000 institutions and organizations in the United Kingdom that contain subject collections or provide information services. Entries include street address, phone number, e-mail address, URL, brief description of purpose, subject coverage, publications, and information about access. Arranged alphabetically, with a subject index and list of acronyms.

Detailed profiles, updated yearly, for more than 35,000 public, academic, special, and government libraries in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories. Related organizations are also covered: networks, consortia, and other cooperative library organizations; library schools and training courses; library systems; libraries for the blind and physically handicapped; libraries for the deaf and hearing impaired; state and provincial public library agencies; state school library agencies; and U.S. armed forces libraries overseas. Entries vary in level of detail but typically include address, phone and fax number, e-mail address, URL, date of founding, network participation, holdings

counts, income and expenditures, special collections, key personnel, special services, and hours of operation. May also list software and database vendors, library publications, size of population served, and annual circulation. 

Searchable data fields include library/institution name, library type, geographic indicators (e.g., zip code, city), subject areas, names of personnel, job titles, and automation systems. Ranges may be specified for such data as number of staff, size of holdings, circulation, population served, and expenditures.

Free access to physical address data only. Annual paid subscription required for full access with download privileges.

Also issued in print biennially (1908–77), then annually (1978–present). The 2010/11 edition, in two volumes, is the 63rd. Subtitle, compiler, place of publication, and publisher have varied. Entries arranged geographically. Summary statistical information regarding public libraries precedes each state, region, and province division; total numbers of North American libraries by category are provided in the front matter of v. 1. Indexed by organizations and personnel.

Although contact information may be outdated and some government libraries have been closed, this directory of more than 2,200 collections around the world remains useful for its extensive coverage and detailed indexing. Includes presidential and national libraries, as well as academic, medical, law, engineering, military base, penal, Indian reservation, and other libraries. Entries arranged by branch of government. Indexes: library name; type of library; geographic; and subject. The website of the Federal Library and Information Center Committee (http://www.loc.gov/flicc/federallib.html), while less comprehensive than this directory, provides current links to selected federal library websites.
